Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of blockchain startup Ripple, expects the cryptocurrency market to double in size this year, with the total market capitalization topping $5 trillion. He believes that the arrival of the first U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), as well as the upcoming bitcoin "halving" event will drive market growth.
According to Garlinghouse, macro trends such as ETFs will attract more institutional money to the market, driving demand, while the Bitcoin halving event will lead to a contraction in supply, which will further boost the market. According to him, "With all these macro factors impacting the cryptocurrency industry, the overall market capitalization of the industry is expected to easily double by the end of this year."
On Jan. 10, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the first U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, allowing institutional and retail investors to gain exposure to bitcoin without directly owning the underlying asset.
Garlinghouse noted that the potential for positive cryptocurrency regulatory momentum in the U.S. will also drive market growth. According to him, this election year, investors are optimistic about the policies of the next administration, which are expected to be more favorable to the cryptocurrency industry.
While the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has been more aggressive in enforcing laws against cryptocurrency companies, including Ripple, Garlinghouse believes this could change. He said, "I think the U.S. is still the largest economy in the world, but unfortunately it has been one of the more hostile countries to the cryptocurrency market. I think that will start to change as well."
In addition, the Bitcoin halving event is one of the factors driving the market. Bitcoin halving is a technical event that occurs approximately every four years in the history of Bitcoin, which means that the mining rewards received by Bitcoin miners will be cut in half. The halving event is predicted to further drive the price of Bitcoin up to new all-time highs.
